Ten a day! Are you serious?
Up until recently five a day had been chanted to us by health and fitness experts (and our mothers) as the gold standard with respect to our intake of fruit and veg. Then came the sad realisation for those of us ticking that box by horsing down blueberries, strawberries and apples. It turns out that we were actually overloading our systems with sugar, especially when adding sugary fruits to other foodstuffs such as yoghurts and breakfast cereals, which all contain a lot more sugar than you might think. Oh very sneaky stuff is sugar! A fruit yoghurt and one serving of fruit contains the recommended sugar allowance for a child for the day. So recently the chant has changed to four veg and only one fruit!
Studies by imperial College London say that while 5 portions is good, 10 portions of vegetables per day is much better for maintenance of both physical and mental health. But let’s face it, for most of us in today’s busy world, this would mean getting up at five in the morning to start eating our spinach and carrots! So does this mean salad for breakfast, dinner and tea? Help! Okay it doesn’t have to be salad, try homemade vegetable soup, vegetable stir-fry’s, and bowls of vegetable curry. And for those days when you don’t have time to chop vegetables for Ireland, help is at hand!
