So what is the flu?
The flu is a common infection of the upper respiratory tract caused by the flu virus. It usually occurs during the winter months. For most people, it is an unpleasant but not life-threatening illness.
How can I avoid catching the flu?
The best way to avoid catching the flu is to get vaccinated against the flu virus.
You should also:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
- Wash your hands often with warm soapy water or use alcohol hand gel which can be purchased at the pharmacy.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches a surface or object that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
- Use tissues rather than handkerchiefs when you cough or sneeze. Make sure to bin them straight away, don’t keep them in your pocket where germs can survive.
Tell me about the flu vaccine- how does it work?
The seasonal flu vaccine helps your immune system to produce antibodies to fight the flu virus. If you have been vaccinated and come into contact with the virus, the antibodies will attack the virus preventing infection.
So should I get the Flu Vaccine?
Anyone over the age is 18 is eligible to receive the flu vaccine from their pharmacist. For certain ‘at-risk’ groups, the flu vaccine is highly recommended as you are more likely to experience complications if you catch the flu. At risk groups include those aged over 65, pregnant women and people with certain long term illnesses. Healthcare workers and carers should also be vaccinated.
But can I get the flu from the vaccine?
The flu vaccine doesn’t contain any live viruses – it cannot give you the flu.
